Five of Asner’s seven Emmy wins (and 12 of his 17 nominations) would come from playing Lou Grant. It didn’t change the fact, however, that Asner’s portrayal of Grant was a fan favorite. The show Lou Grant would also switch format from a half-hour comedy to an hour-long drama.

Lou Grant would be getting the eponymous treatment this time, as the character said goodbye to the Minneapolis TV station and hello to a Los Angeles newspaper. Appearing in 166 of The Mary Tyler Moore Show’s 168 episodes, fans still wanted more of Lou Grant after the originally sitcom's run came to an end.

And while the show was named after and stars Mary Tyler Moore, Asner’s Lou Grant, Mary’s boss at the TV station, was just as important to the show’s success thanks to the pairs great dynamic.

Cardellini does the best she can, but the writing for her character and her motivations make no sense.Īlso in the cast: Ed Asner (“The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” “Lou Grant”) as Abe, a resident at Judy’s facility who might as well be a live-action version of “The Simpsons’” Abe Simpson.Īpplegate deserves an Emmy “Dead to Me,” a quick burial. The Mary Tyler Moore Show is considered one of the greatest sitcoms in the history of American television. I’m pretty sure there was a Lifetime version of this story and the best part was it was over in two hours. The more you think about it, the more you realize none of it makes sense, and it even makes less sense with each passing episode, as Judy continues to worm her way into Jen’s life, living in her guest house and befriending Jen’s sons. Calling it far-fetched is like saying the Three Stooges were masters of the Shakespearean arts. Let the curious - or the masochists - seek it out. Other media outlets have spoiled it - or done readers a favor by revealing it - but I’m not going to do that here. That’s not even the big twist in this show. All is going great in this “Kate & Allie” relationship until Jen decides to surprise Judy by showing up at her place and finds ( spoiler!) Steve (James Marsden, “Westworld”) is very much alive. The two bond over “Facts of Life” reruns and a little bit of weed.

Judy, who works in an assisted living facility, mourns the loss of her boyfriend Steve, and her sunny personality chips away at Judy’s walls. The two meet at a “grief circle” and Jen is immediately wary of this stranger who wants to wrap her in a big hug.

Now if “Dead to Me” stopped there - if it were focused on Jen and her attempts to rebuild her life with friends and family (including perhaps the most formidable mother-in-law from hell of any series ever) then this review would be a rave and I would be pushing everyone to watch.īut creator, executive producer and writer Liz Feldman (“2 Broke Girls,” The Ellen DeGeneres Show”) tips the show into a land beyond farcical with the introduction of Jen’s new best friend, Judy (Linda Cardellini, “ER,” “Avengers: Endgame”). Jen has moments in which she’d like to curl in a corner somewhere, but she has two sons who need her, teenager Charlie (Sam McCarthy) and grade-schooler Henry (Luke Roessler, “Legion”), so she snaps on a hard face for the most of the day, save for the interludes in the bathroom, where she sobs into a pillow.Īpplegate is utterly authentic as a woman flailing through an endless cloud of grief.

The driver was never identified and the police seem to have moved on, but Jen can’t help checking out every car she passes for damage and screaming at speeding cars. Jen (Applegate) is a successful realtor whose husband was killed in a hit-and-run accident a few months earlier. The actress, who made her mark in such sitcoms as “Married … with Children,” “Samantha Who?” and “Up All Night,” stars as an angry widow in the new Netflix dark comedy “Dead to Me,” from executive producers Will Ferrell and Adam McKay.
